Kippei spent a couple of long days checking on all the evacuees who might be his responsibility, attempting to determine that all of them had in fact, gotten out, and stubbornly refusing to allow himself to check on the whereabouts of Ibu Shinji until every other Fudomine resident who might have been affected by the order had been accounted for.

When he finally allowed himself to look, he realized that he really had no idea where Shinji might be found, whether he had been involved in trying to fix the problem or possibly been hurt when the breach itself had been discovered. Kippei had no idea, though he suspected that even if Shinji had been hurt he would still be in there helping to fix it or clean up or whatever else needed doing.

All that area was quarantined, however, and even ambassadors were not being allowed inside. At this point, Kippei did not care--after finding that no one he asked knew where Shinji was or how he was or had a contact number for him, and having ascertained that he was at least, not in medlab, Kippei reminded himself that Sada would need to know exactly what happened to her brother--never mind what he himself wanted, since that, he felt, was irrelevant.

Only mechanics and engineers and station security were being allowed into Grey and Brown sectors at the moment, which meant only their clearances were working on the access points. Kippei found a low-ranking member of security who probably would not be missed too soon, knocked him out from behind and searched his pockets. Unethical, illegal, and possibly stupid, but oh well. He wrapped a hooded cloak around himself in vague disguise, and headed into Grey to look for Shinji.

Shinji half sat half collapsed on a bench seat in outside one of the small quarantine rooms. He had been in and out of that room more times than he ever wanted to, and he was still clean, but he as also filthy. Covered in grime and burns that were mostly superficial, sweaty and feeling oddly like liquid. It was hot as hell and a total mess, but they had contained it, thanks to the hellishly good teamwork of the head engineers. Shinji thought they were more than a bit odd, but he was never again letting one bad rumour circle about either of them, his admiration close to adoration.

There would be shifts for seventy two hours to finish clean up and continue observations, but the reactor was fixed, probably better than before. Shinji had a reprieve for twelve hours, but nowhere to go for it that wasn't contaminated as hell and he really didnt feel like bunking down with every second person from the downbelow in the middle of a garden. That was just a little more surreal than he could handle. That, and he really wanted a proper bed...and a shower. Oh god, water. And food! Sighing heavily, Shinji leant back against the warm wall and wished for a fucking miracle.

Kippei had long ago discovered that if you just walked in like you had a right to be there and knew where you were going, nine times out of ten you could get away with it. So he didn't bother trying to avoid anyone, simply kept walking toward where most of the activity seemed to be, then stopping what looked to be a junior mechanic and asking him if he'd seen Ibu Shinji.

The kid looked tired as hell, probably too tired to wonder who he was or what he was doing here, and simply muttered something about quarantine rooms and gestured vaguely back in the direction he'd come. Kippei guessed his shift was finally over and he just wanted to go eat and rest and whatever.

He was rather impressed with the amount of work that appeared to be getting done--men were busy everywhere he looked, almost, though the sense of hustle was tinged with fatigue, and no wonder. It was quite the mess they were cleaning up. It was easy enough to stay unnoticed in the busyness, and he found a semi-official decon area that he assumed was the place the kid had been talking about. Now to find Shinji... he stepped in a looked around, narrowing his eyes against the heat and lingering acridness in the air.

The door opened and Shinji looked up and thought maybe he was seeing things, because what he was seeing was an apparently illegal blind man, squinting through the heat. When he asked for a miracle he meant of the omg, great kind, not the fuck me its doomsday kind. Blinking back the heat, and realising he was not, in fact, hallucinating, Shinji looked back at the floor and figured whatever the hell Tachibana Kippei was doing here, he could just walk on by. Hopefully he wouldnt even notice him.

Kippei's eyes quickly skimmed over most of occupants of the room, having no interest whatsoever in anyone that was not who he was looking for. His gaze came unerringly to rest on the slender figure slumped against one wall, and he strode over without a second thought--without, in fact, even thinking what he was going to say, considering that Shinji likely was not going to be pleased to see him. Not that Kippei had wanted to come chase him down in the first place; it was for his sister's sake, he told himself, and he almost believed it.

Whatever he might have said in the way of explanation got discarded instantly in any case, as he noted the other man's exhaustion and general state of disarray. "I knew you were going to do that," he said flatly, not without some grudging admiration, but mostly annoyed without exactly knowing why. "You look like you need a medic but you've been down here working your arse off the whole time, haven't you?" He eyed the burns and some other minor injuries and shook his head. Nothing he couldn't probably treat himself with a standard medkit, but Ibu obviously hadn't even taken the time to do that.

"Are you done here?" Presumably he was ending his shift like many of the others Kippei had passed on his way here, heading for Green and the gardens and grumbling tiredly about the makeshift accommodations. He didn't bother waiting for an answer, gesturing impatiently for Shinji to follow him. "You're coming with me."

"The hell I am," Shinji muttered darkly. "I'm comfortable right where I bloody am thank you very much." God the nerve of the man, walking in here and looking at him like he was a filthy servant mechanic, which he was but that was so not the point! And what did he mean anyway, he knew he was going to do that? Like he had a choice. There was a hole in a nuclear reactor's containment field, of course he was going to work until there wasn't a hole anymore, if he didn't everyone died, end of story. And what did he care anyway? Glaring for all he was worth, Shinji sullenly turned his head away and stared at the floor. Let the clean, sexy and compelte bastard Ambassador go back to his nice clean rooms with his nice bath and bed and...god hated him. Really. There was no other excuse.

Kippei growled in exasperation. "The hell you are," he repeated. "I am not letting you sit here like that when you obviously need medical attention and a decent place to sleep, and Sada will have my head if I let you sleep in the Gardens when I have room at my place. You come with me now or I drag you out, your choice." He considered that for a minute. "Might have to gag you first but I am going to drag you out of here if I have to." He glared right back, waiting.

From: [identity profile] ayretala.livejournal.com
"I do not need medical attention!" Shinji ground out. They were just stupid burns and a few shallow cuts, nothing that wasn't fixable with cold water and bandaids. And what the hell! Tachibana Kippei was offering him...a bed. At his place. Scratch that, there was no god, only a devil and the devil was really, really mean.

"I'll call Sada and explain I am fine and tell her I love the gardens and can't wait to stay there thus absolving you of your damned mission or duty or whatever the hell it is. You're her keeper, not mine."

Kippei set his jaw, reaching out to grab his wrist and drag him out of his seat, carefully avoiding burns but keeping a firm hold of his arm. "What part of 'I am going to drag you if I have to' did you not understand? You most certainly do need medical attention, and at the very least I am going to see that you get it," he bit out. "Are you going to come quietly or do I have to take drastic measures?"

The. Hell! Shinji stared at his arm in that...god he had sexy hands and the last thing Shinji wanted to be thinking about right now was what they would feel like touching him if they weren't trying to rip his arms out of his sockets. Not that that was what Tachibana was probably trying to do, but it sure as hell felt that way. Stumbling into an upright position, Shinji groaned and glared, because this was just torture beyond what was really necessary, even if you were the devil.

"I didn't know the devil hated me so much...then again, I didn't know there was a devil or that he was god or anything until, oh, a minute ago." He waved Kippei off in whatever hell direction he wanted to go. "Lead on, oh great Ambassador."

An expression that was not quite a smile but nevertheless carried a certain amount of grim satisfaction settled over Kippei's face, and he nodded as he released Shinji's arm, keeping a wary eye on him anyway in case he decided to get stubborn again. He led the way back out of the room, heading back the way he'd come in, out of Grey section toward the shuttle station.

"I'm flattered," he noted dryly, "but I hardly think this counts as diabolical. I don't work for anyone more supernatural than the government of Fudomine--unless you think your sister is the devil, and possibly I might not argue with you." She certainly took fiendish delight in tormenting him sometimes.

"I bet you say that about all the girls," Shinji grumbled, a little peeved by the way Tachibana kept looking at him as if he might suddenly turn into a disobediant child that needed to be smacked or something. The shame of it was Shinji wasn't sure he wouldn't enjoy that...damn, bastard!

"...Is Ina okay?"

From: [identity profile] shattermelt.livejournal.com
Kippei blinked, not certain who he meant. Ina? He ran through his mental list of Fudomine, assuming that Shinji would not have asked him about someone he wasn't likely to know about, but the name didn't sound familiar.

"Who?" he asked, puzzled.

"Inanna?" Shinji stared at the man. He knew Tachibana had visited her damnit. "The ..." He was not calling her a whore, even if it was what she was! "The proprieter of the Blue Angel?"

From: [identity profile] shattermelt.livejournal.com
"Ahhh." Madame Innana, of course. Apparently Shinji knew her rather well. Kippei was not at all sure how he was expected to have known the woman's damn nickname, but apparently he was, judging by the look of disbelief he was getting. "She's fine," he answered gruffly, motioning for Ibu to board the shuttle ahead of him.

Date: 2005-12-08 06:55 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] ayretala.livejournal.com
It was sort of annoying, that he made him get on the shuttle first, as if he might suddenly make a run for it in the opposite direction. As if he could run right now. The thought itself was laughable. Grumbling under his breath to himself, Shinji half sat once again, and half collapsed into the seat, sighing in relief to once again be sitting down. He watched Tachibana carefully, still a little mystified to see him, since the guy had made it perfectly clear he wanted nothing to do with him.

"How is the security system?"

"It works very well," Kippei told him, inclining his head in acknowledgement. "Thank you for setting it up. I've had no trouble with it." Shinji looked annoyed, but Kippei didn't care. Kippei was going to make sure he got the attention he needed and a comfortable place to stay whether he liked it or not. The fact that he would have done this regardless of whether or not Sada wanted it, he was carefully not thinking about.

Date: 2005-12-08 07:03 am (UTC)

And so it bloody well should, Shinji thought. He'd spent a whole damn day on it, for a guy who did nothing but glare at him like he was a rat of some weird species no one knew about yet and he wasn't sure he should warn the world just yet. Shinji couldn't care less, leaning back against the seat and closing his eyes, taking deep breaths and smiling a little because god, the air was clean!

Kippei watched him out of the corner of his eye, now that Shinji was leaning back and not paying attention, noting the lines of stress and weariness on his face. The man was in serious need of rest, in Kippei's opinion--stubborn bastard. His gaze lingered absently on the worn out mechanic, tracking up and down his slumped form, detailing injuries and streaks and smudges of dirt and other signs of hard labor.

His mouth set in a grim line, and he resisted the random urge to reach over and brush Ibu's hair out of his face. What the hell, stupid, and why did he think this was a good idea again? Having Shinji stay in his rooms, sleeping there? Fuck. He almost sighed, but restrained himself and looked away. At least they were almost there... not that this was necessarily a good thing.

From: [identity profile] ayretala.livejournal.com
The shuttle came to a stop and Shinji stood immediately. Angry. He'd heard those stupid sighs and could almost feel how disgruntled Tachibana was by this whole thing, as if it were a tangible thing, his discomfort.

"This is stupid, you don't want me to go to your house and my sister is not an idiot, she won't care if I stay with everyone else, and I won't care, and you'll be much happier I'm sure and green is closer to brown anyway so it won't take me as long to get back on duty when I have to, which is better."

Date: 2005-12-08 07:56 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] shattermelt.livejournal.com
"No!" Kippei said flatly. "What's stupid is for you to stay there when you can stay with me perfectly well and get some decent rest. You most assuredly need. And I would not be happier--I admit I'm not thrilled about this, but neither do I mind all that much, and you need it. I would be much less happy if I let you go down to green," he added irritably, all too aware of how true this was.

From: [identity profile] ayretala.livejournal.com
This was stupid, but Shinji looked aside and waited quietly for Kippei to lead the way. He wasn't going to argue with the Ambassador, but nor was he under any illusion he was welcome. This was just another of Tachibana's self-assigned missions. Something to do with making sure every member of the station from his nation was present and accounted for and in good health or some shit. Whatever.

Date: 2005-12-08 08:16 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] shattermelt.livejournal.com
Shinji was still being stubborn, but he had at least stopped arguing. God, it was frustrating and why did he even care? Kippei frowned to himself as he led the way back to his rooms, taking off the cloak he'd used as he walked, and running absent fingers through his hair, as though it needed straightening. Inside, he looked critically at Shinji and decided that fixing him up with a medkit should probably be secondary to letting him get cleaned up, even if Kippei himself thought that the injuries were a more immediate problem.

"If you want to shower first, it's in here," Kippei told him, motioning toward the bathroom, "and I'll find you something to wear. It'll probably be too big but it's better than..." Sitting around in a towel, he was going to say, and swallowed hard, pushing away the mental images. "Better than nothing," he finished awkwardly. That was just as bad, really. Groaning mentally, he concentrated fiercely, doing some random nav calculations in his head until his thoughts fell into place in a neat, orderly fashion again.

From: [identity profile] ayretala.livejournal.com
Shower. Oh god, clean water. Shinji was through the door, half out of his clothes and running the hot water before Tachibana even finished talking. He was halfway through washing his hair when he realised what Tachibana had said. Clothes. Oh yeah...they came in handy and fuck he was not putting those dirty things back on, but Tachibana...no way. He had to wear his clothes? Hell yes it was better than walking around in a towel while the Ambassador sneered at him, but this was just not a good idea! He should have argued more. It was just another reason to stay in the shower longer. At least there was hot water.

Date: 2005-12-08 08:39 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] shattermelt.livejournal.com
Shinji took a long time in the shower, not that Kippei blamed him. If he'd been that grimy and worn out--and he had been, more times than he cared to count--and he'd had the chance for a long hot shower, he sure as hell would have taken it. It took a great deal of concentration not to think about him in there, hot and steamy naked Shinji with the water streaming down over his bare skin. Alright, so he didn't quite manage not to think of it at all, but Kippei went back to his mental calculations with a vengeance while he went to find some spare clothes, and then to his small kitchen to get Shinji something to eat when he got done.

Something hot, like soup, and Shinji still wasn't done by the time he'd finished making it, so he went and hunted out the medkit as well, leaving it and the clothing on the table while he went into the other room to find sheets and blankets for making up a bed on the couch. He didn't have a spare room--he could afford more space than most on the station, he supposed, but he hadn't seen the need or had the inclination. His quarters were fairly spartan compared to most diplomatic accommodations, but they suited him well enough.

From: [identity profile] ayretala.livejournal.com
Figuring he had spent long enough and then some, Shinji turned off the taps and grabbed a towel, rubbing his hair dry a little and then wrapping the towel around his waist, Shinji peeked out the door and saw the room was empty and clothes on the couch. He crept out, grabbed them and went back to the bathroom, rubbing himself dry with long, lazy strokes and then pulling on the clothes. They were big, but comfortable and they smelt like the Ambassador. Probably not a good thing. It wasn't likely Shinji would have peaceful dreams tonight.

Towelling his hair again, Shinji brushed his fingers through it and figured it was good enough. Hanging the towel on a spare hook, Shinji wandered out nervously, looking around for Tachibana.

Kippei nodded in satisfaction as he reentered the room, liking for some reason the sight of Shinji in his clothes. Why was he just standing there? Everything was on the table... Kippei dropped the bedding he was carrying on the couch and studied Shinji. Much better. Clean and not half dead anymore. Kippei made an abortive attempt to reach out and touch his arm, silently cursing himself for an idiot as he turned away.

"Come and sit down," he said shortly, heading for the kitchen again and dishing up a bowl of soup which he set on the table, and then he opened up the medkit and started sorting through it, looking for the appropriate bandages and painkillers.

Food! Shinji stared at it hungrily, but glanced around the room, watching Tachibana unpack the kit, as if he knew what everything was, which he probably did.

"Um..." He really didn't want to be annoying right now. He was happy just being clean and cool and not in a toxic sweat box. "Can I have some water? I'm really thirsty."

Kippei grimaced, having forgotten something so basic was a sure sign of how off balance he was at the moment. But he went to get Shinji some water without comment, setting it on the table and then taking a seat as well, telling himself sternly to wait to start patching him up until he was done eating. He felt rather obscurely angry with himself, not wanting to care or knowing why he did, but the visible injuries bothered him and he wanted to do something about it.

But he waited, letting Shinji finish eating before he came back around the table and handed Shinji some painkillers to take with his water, then set to work with burn cream, bandages and some probably rather unnecessary dashes of antiseptic, his movements quick and efficient as he made sure that Shinji was patched up to his satisfaction. He still didn't know why he cared, and had stopped thinking about it by the time he was done, so much so that he reached without thinking to brush Shinji's hair out of his eyes with an absent but almost caressing hand when he had finished. Belatedly he realized what he'd done, and cursed himself for ten kinds of a fool as he packed up the medkit again and put it away, absolutely avoiding looking at Shinji or talking to him. Damn the man.

Those hands were freaking everywhere! Shinji was startled more than once at the almost mechnical way Tachibana swabbed disinfectant, applied a salve, bandaged, cleaned...it was insane and yet, he had to admit, comforting. He didn't feel unsure about what Tachibana was doing; felt almost better than if a real medic had done it. He was just starting to get used to those hands being on his skin, warm and strong and he wasn't thinking about other things damnit! When Tachibana stopped, finished, and Shinji looked away, damning himself for feeling disappointed when he already knew exactly how disinterested Tachibana Kippei was. Then, while he wasn't looking, those same fingers that had just bandaged him like he was a block of clay or something, wiped his hair out of of his face, tucking it behind one ear. Startled, Shinji turned and watched the fingers move away, along with the man while he methodically packed up. Did Tachibana even know what he had just done? He couldn't, and yet...he seemed annoyed still.

Feeling more than a little out of place and knowing he was an unwelcome guest in the other man's home, Shinji pulled his feet up onto the couch...oh man, it was that couch! He was going to get to sleep on the couch of his dreams! ...While Tachibana slept in the next room. Damn it.

Shinji distracted himself by looking at the bandages. A lot of breathing room in the gauze, perfect for burns, but the cream stank. Shinji wrinkled his nose, because he had liked the clean soap smell. And he was still thirsty. He glanced over the couch and spotted Tachibana, but he didn't want to annoy him, or ask for anything else, so he quietly got up, taking his glass to the small kitchenette and getting another glass from the tap. And then another. Ah, blessed liquid.

Kippei took a minute to center himself after he finished putting the kit away, standing in front of the cabinet and staring at nothing, still a little startled by his unconscious action, and hating the streak of weakness that wanted to do it again and again, and a lot of other things too. To curl up on the couch with Shinji and hold him as if he were Sada, and stroke that fresh clean hair in soothing comfort and also, he had to admit, just because he freaking wanted to.

He rested his forehead against the cabinet door and closed his eyes, taking a deep breath. He was going to go out there and make sure that Shinji had a comfortable place to sleep and told himself sternly that it wasn't going to hurt him to just leave Shinji there and walk out of room, to go back to his own bedroom and sleep there. He didn't want or need anything from Shinji, and he repeated that to himself like a mantra as he went back and began mechanically to sort out the couch. I don't need you, I don't want you, I don't care. I don't need you I don't want you I don't CARE. And it was more and more obviously a lie each time he thought it, and eventually he gave up and stopped thinking, but he was silent with an aching sensation in his chest, and he couldn't help watching Shinji's slight form, swallowed up in the borrowed clothing as he moved around the room.

A faint ghost of a smile with a tinge of bitter wryness crossed his face--he was reminded of the very early days when Sada had been rescued, before they had found her properly fitting clothing either. But this was so different, even if he still had the same, or nearly the same random confusing urge to wrap a smaller person up and hold them close and safe against his chest. It hurts, he noted vaguely, a clinical analysis of his own reaction to seeing either one of these siblings looking war torn and weary and with no one but himself with his brusque and clumsy efforts at caring for them, himself who was manifestly inadequate to provide any sort of comfort.

"Do you want to call her?" he heard himself asking abruptly, a question born perhaps out of the vague thought that they might take better care of each other than he ever had of either of them.

Looking over his shoulder, and wondering if he was going to spend the next twelve hours being startled, Shinji shook his head slowly, putting the glass down and wandering back to the couch, hiking the pants up as he went. It was going to be damn embarassing if they just slipped right off his hips, but he didnt want to do the drawstring up any further or it would bunch on his hips uncomfortably and he had to sleep in these clothes so...Tachibana was just going to have to deal with a little skin.

"She doesn't need to know," he said softly. "I'll call her in a few days." When he didn't have any evidence of being fried by a nuclea reactor. He looked at Tachibana carefully, feeling guilty yet again because the guy was so obviously uncomfortable with him being there. He reached over and gently took the sheet out of his hand, making up the rest of the bed himself in a few quick jerks. Something occurred to him then.

"Do you want to?"

From: [identity profile] shattermelt.livejournal.com
Well and truly shocked out of his distraction with that little bit of skin that showed as Shinji adjusted his pants, Kippei just stared at him for a minute, a bit wonderingly. Did he want to?

"I...not yet," he answered haltingly, completely thrown off balance by the gesture, as if Shinji was admitting to recognizing that Kippei saw her as a sister too, and might want to contact her. He'd been half convinced that Shinji resented that about him, and here he was easily offering to share, or so it seemed. Kippei didnt know what to think. "You're right," he agreed mechanically, "she doesnt have to know yet."

Blinking, thinking it was rather like Tachibana Kippei's brain just flew out the window, Shinji tossed the blanket over the couch and sat at the head, pulling the pillow into his lap and just watching Tachibana. He was interesting to watch, when you got past the whole 'he hates my guts' thing. And he was still sexy as hell, if untouchable. Also, Shinji was almost positive that was the first thing Tachibana had ever agreed with him about without sounding like someone was trying to tear teeth out of his mouth. He must really like Sada after all. Shinji wondered if he was just waiting for Sada to get old enough to marry and frowned.

"You know, if you want to marry Sada, you better be prepared for a hellishly long engagement. And I'll buy her a damn chastity belt if I have to just to make sure its as long as its meant to be."

Kippei just stared at him. "I don't want to marry her," he growled irritably, and almost bit his tongue out in annoyance at what he had just admitted. Marrying, wtf? He'd never considered the idea of marrying anybody, and yet he'd just as much as admitted that it wasn't Sada but her brother that he'd want if he did. God, he was fucked. Shinji must think he was insane. Kippei wasn't too sure he was wrong.

"Go to bed," he said gruffly, shaking his head as he waited for Shinji to do just that before he left the room. Hell, he would leave right this minute to sort out his confusion in private, but part of him stubbornly refused to do so until he saw Shinji safely tucked away for some much needed rest.

Shinji just stared. What the hell was that meant to mean? Was the guy engaged? Betrothed? Was that why he seemed to have such a stick up his arse? He could have just said so! Shrugging, and a little peeved at once again being told what to do, Shinji nonetheless pulled the sheet and blanket once and slid in, still looking at Tachibana, who was..looking back. This was so weird. Did he want him to have nightmares of an angry Ambassador kicking him down the hall in the middle of the night or what? Asking for his burn cream back and skinning him when he said it had sunk in already? Okay...that one was gross already and he hadn't even dreamt it yet.

He decided the best option was to fake sleep, so he settled in as if he fully intended to do so.

"Good night, Tachibana-san."

Kippei didn't answer, too disturbed and confused and angry at himself to respond. He leaned down without really thinking about it to tuck the blankets in more securely around Shinji's slender frame, making sure he was well covered, studying him with an expression that was torn between bemusement and annoyance and a kind of wistful tenderness, his eyes full of troubled questions as he stood for a moment just looking down at him, meeting the dark eyes looking back without really being aware of what he was doing, too caught up in the chaos in his head to realize that he was showing a great many things rather too openly, even if they were barely visible.

"Goodnight," he said softly, followed by an equally quiet command to turn off the lights, and in the darkness his hand almost lingered on Shinji's head for a moment, but drew back without quite touching as he turned away and left the room. Jesus, he was going to die. Rikkai wasn't going to kill him. Shinji was.

What the hell...he was tucking him in. Shinji just stared at those hands, fascinated and more than a little dumbfounded. What the hell was Tachibana Kippei, who hated his guts doing tucking him in, unless he didn't in fact...hate his guts. Shinji looked up, startled and trying not to show it, meeting dark eyes a little questioningly and shocked at the odd look on Tachibana's face.

It was the face Shinji always dreamed of living next to, and it was stuck on that hellishly sexy body. Besmused, annoyed, wistful...caring. Almost tender. And it was asking him questions Shinji didn't think were possible. He waited until it was dark and he heard Tachibana's door shut and he sat up, looking over the top of the couch at Tachibana's bedroom door. Who the hell...

Tachibana Kippei was the most confusing bastard to ever live. Hands down.
