Kippei was still annoyed, though he still didn't know if he was more annoyed with himself or the cat. Possibly he should have paid more attention to it in the past, and then he might know it well enough to know the answers to Shinji's questions. If it had as much of a personality as Shinji said it did, then it shouldn't matter that they didn't 'speak the same language', as it were.

Shinji fell asleep soon after and Kippei wasn't really surprised; he figured crying like that could wear you out pretty quick, which did not make him any happier with himself for having precipitated it. Or the kitten, for that matter. He sighed, looking over at where the fluffball was curled up against Shinji's side, and reached over to poke it gently.

"Hey, you," he whispered, trying to keep his voice and thoughts quiet to avoid waking Shinji. How were you meant to talk to a cat when you couldn't read it's mind?

Kii flinched and lifted his head, glaring at the invading finger. Now he wanted to play, as if cats did things when people wanted them to. Well, Kii did things when Shinji wanted him to but that was because Shinji asked him in catspeak. Or something. Shinji was just weird, really, but Kii loved him. So it was annoying that someone was distubing his time with Shinji. He meowed softly, not wanting to wake Shinji but wanting to tell Kippei that poking him was not a nice way to get his attention.

Kippei snorted, unimpressed by the glare or the meow that sounded rather reproachful, even to him. "I am not very happy with you," he informed the kitten, nevertheless stroking it's tiny head with one finger. "We made Shinji cry."

Kii thought Kippei was interesting. Most people were useless. Shinji was special because Shinji spoke to him. Kippei was just weird because Kippei seemed to only be able to feel one thing at a time, and it was so damned obvious even Kii could figure it out. He knew discontent; it was when Shinji put new milk on top of stale milk. He also knew fondess; it was petting. And he knew love; that was Shinji. Kii slowly got up, figuring he should try and figure out what Kippei wanted and at least get some cuddles for his troubles. He picked his way over the blanket and nosed up against Kippei's thigh.

Kippei sighed, rolling over on his back and picking the kitten up, depositing him on his chest.

"You're such a pain in the arse," he muttered. "Shinji loves the hell out of you and I don't get it. You're just a cat." A cute cat, but still. Just a cat. "I shouldn't have suggested that to him, and I didn't mean to, but I was just wondering. It doesn't matter to me, but I guess he thinks you're special."

Which was really the annoying thing. Shinji cared enough about the kitten to cry over losing him, if he wasn't what Shinji thought he was. Kippei was pretty sure that he was, he knew Shinji wasn't that self-delusional, but since he couldn't talk to the cat himself he had no way to prove it.

Jealous. Kii felt inordinately pleased with himself for getting that emotion out of Shinji's mate. He settled comfortably on Kippei's chest and kneaded his claws in his shirt, purring loudly, as if to say 'too bad and pet me more'.

Kippei winced at the prick of tiny claws. "Ow, jeezus," he muttered. "Smug little bastard." It was rather hypocritical of him to be calling anyone else a smug bastard, but he thought in this case it was justified. He could hear the smugness in the kitten's purr.

"You so are just fine. I dunno how he talks to you but there's nothing wrong with you at all. It's ridiculous for him to be so worried about it," Kippei grumbled, but he petted the kitten gingerly anyway, his large hand almost as big as Kii was.

Victory! Too bad they weren't playing three things now, Kii knew he could get Kii to do three things for him now...well, now that Shinji was asleep, of course. Kii glanced over at Shinji, aware Shinji was dreaming, but it wasn't Shinji's dream so that was okay; Kii didn't need to worry. So instead he snuck forward until he could touch his nose to Kippei's chin, snuggling into the warmth of him. Mmmm yeah.

Kippei sighed, giving up. Sometimes, the kitten reminded him very strongly of Shinji. He couldn't deny that it was very comforting to have the kitten around when Shinji wasn't there. To have even that much of him, something Shinji loved, was probably what had kept him sane while Shinji was gone. And he couldn't really blame the kitten for what had happened today. That was mostly his own fault.

"I love him," he whispered, still talking to the cat, more of habit now than because he thought Kii was listening. "I love him so much, and I wish I didn't do so many stupid things." Really, it might be better if Shinji made him a slave and controlled him all the time, and then Kippei would never hurt him.

Melancholy. It was like sadness, or so Shinji said. Kii cocked his little head to the side, then started licking Kippei's face because he was sad and needed a bath and someone to kiss it better. Again, Shinji's logic, but it seemed to work when Shinji did it so whatever.

Kippei laughed, a soft wry sound because that tickled, and somehow Kii was trying to make him feel better, and that was just weird, but also touching in a strange kind of way. He was sure it was because of Shinji.

"We're a pair, aren't we?" he asked musingly. "You like me because I'm important to Shinji, and I keep you around because he likes you." In spite of everything it did make him feel a little better, but he wished he could think of how to convince Shinji that he hadn't been planting things in the kitten's mind and making it up for him.

Whatever Kippei was saying, it felt right to Kii and he purred loudly, batting his nose repeatedly against Kippei's jaw in the hopes he would pet him some more. Honestly, what did the guy expect? Song and dance? Not likely.

Kippei decided to take that as agreement, and nodded to himself, tucking the kitten in under his chin and stroking his for with an absent hand.

"Later," he murmured. "Later I will figure it out. Though I still don't see how it matters." He frowned faintly. "Isn't it obvious, though? If you didn't have a mind of your own, I wouldn't care that he pays attention to you."

Kii thought Shinji was wrong. Kippei wasn't a cat he was a dog. Loyal to a fault and running in circles trying to catch his own tail. There he was again, coming full circle back to jealousy. Kii simply went back to being a smug little cat, swishing his fluffy tail, thrilled that he apparently made Kippei jealous.
