Takayama Rien is Rikkai through and through, a soldier and a spy of sorts, similar to Yagyuu; he has probably been trained with some of the material that Yagyuu has written. He is trained to become someone else so thoroughly that he can take their place, impersonating them down to the last detail of physical appearance and personality, even to their friends and family.

When it was discovered that Ibu Shinji of Fudomine had Rikkai heritage of a very high class, Rikkai began plans to bring him to their homeworld and introduce him to his family and his world, as no one with the blood of Rikkai aristocrats could truly be considered anything else, no matter where they were born. Ambassador Yukimura having made the first overtures, discovered that Shinji had a strong hatred of Rikkai and considered himself completely Fudomine, and he refused to be taken back to Rikkai. Rikkai therefore decided to take more drastic measures, since Fudomine could hardly be allowed to keep someone so important as one of their own.

Rien was assigned to impersonate Shinji's lover, the Fudomine ambassador Tachibana Kippei, in the interest of persuading Shinji to return to Rikkai with him, as it was believed that Shinji would not cooperate without his boyfriend's approval. Rien was therefore assigned to make sure that Shinji believed he had this approval in the form of Rien himself, taking Kippei's place and convincing Shinji to comply with the request.

Ri for his part made a very intensive study of the man he was to become; in order to fool someone as close as a lover, the illusion would have to be complete, with as many details as could be gathered and incorporated into his disguise. This is the most extensive impersonation he has ever done--it required certain permanent physical changes to be made to his appearance, which he agreed to as a matter of duty. Scars, of which there were many, tattoos and other markings are all faithfully duplicated, some less permanent than others, but some which were necessarily irreversible.

He had no real feelings of his own about the ambassador--it was an assignment, nothing more, and he is a very dedicated soldier, firmly believing in his service to his world. He did however gain a certain amount of respect for the man and his achievements, but this is mitigated by his general disdain for Fudomine and its people; he firmly believes in the superiority and right of Rikkai in the war.

He had no strong impressions of Shinji before meeting him, not expecting much of him other than to find a low-stationed mechanic with no experience in anything of class, and to pity him for being forced into a situation he was unprepared and ill suited for. Which is not to say he feels sorry for him--the first rule of any job is not to get emotionally involved, and he does not allow himself to have feelings about his target one way or the other--merely that he considers him to be an object of pity. This, of course, is before he actually meets him.

Rien has few personal tragedies or specific personal reasons to hate Fudomine, but he is fiercely patriotic and believes that Rikkai is superior to all other worlds. He naturally believes that Rikkai is in the right and their position in the war is justified. He does have some family, coming from a military background; his father is also in intelligence, though his mother is dead and has been for many years, unrelated to the war. He has no siblings, but a few cousins and other relations that he does not keep in touch with very often. He doesn't date and has never been in a relationship--I don't know why, but there may be a reason.

When he is not on assignment, Ri has a naturally more warm and outgoing manner than Kippei's public persona--though it would be nearly impossible to be less so. He's a very good actor, very competent and good at what he does, but he's not at all expecting what he's going to find in Shinji. He's somewhat surprised to find himself still with something of a conscience, feeling a little uncomfortable as he usually doesn't with the deception in the face of Shinji's obvious devotion to the real Kippei--Ri's going to be a little shocked by that. He can't quite believe that anyone could be really happy with a stoneface bastard like Tachibana Kippei.
