tp5: kippei and shinji

Kippei had been carefully investigating the situation in Brown, and he didn't like at all the things he was finding out. Rikkai was up to something, and it wasn't going to be anything good. He was worried about Fudo people, since there had been fights breaking out with the overcrowding, and a lot of them were necessarily between the two races that had most reason to resent the other's presence. He was worried about the station as a whole and what Rikkai was planning, but most of all he was worried about Shinji, who still spent a great deal of his work time down in the troubled areas.

Shinji had been right, he did need to learn how to defend himself, and Kippei was relieved to have a suggestion for what to do about it. Shinji was frustrating the hell out of him still with his reactions to their fight the other night, but Kippei knew he'd screwed that up, and it was his own fault. It didn't change the fact that he need to teach Shinji how to fight. So in spite of the fact that he'd been working more hours every day than he ever had before on the station, he came home with the intent to find Shinji for a self defense lesson.

"Come here, to start with," Kippei told him, moving to the center of the room and motioning for Shinji to join him. He could see Shinji eyeing him nervously, and hid a grin. Yeah, he could take care of himself alright. He might not be as smart as Shinji but there were some things he was good at, and this was one of them.

He started showing Shinji the basics, the most likely angles of attack and the best places to aim for, where to strike to disable or immobilise someone most effectively.

"You're small and fast," Kippei told him, "you can use that, too. Someone who's bigger than you will be slower, and have slower responses. Don't let size intimidate you." Although he really didn't think that was a problem for Shinji, considering he hadn't hesitated to slug Kippei who was definitely bigger than he was.

Shinji's head was starting to swim with information and ideas and things to remember and other things to forget and geez how did Kippei expect him to remember even half this stuff. He was getting sore and tired and cranky and rather annoyed with himself for ever thinking he would need to protect Kippei; the man was a machine. A hot sweaty and damn sexy machine at that. But Shinji persevered, because he was serious about this. Seeing how strong Kippei was only made him more determined not to be his weakness so he put in every scrap of effort and concentration he could muster and did his best, but after a while he had to call a stop because Kippei seemed capable of going on for forever, whereas Shinji was suddenly aware he needed to work on his stamina.

"Stop!" He breathed heavily, leaning on his knees and then tumbling back onto the mat and staring at the ceiling. "You sure you're not a cyborg or something?"

Kippei blinked down at him, bemused, and then he lowered himself down beside Shinji and wiped his sweaty forehead with the back of his wrist.

"A what?" he asked, wondering what the hell Shinji was on about now. He was a little sorry for pushing Shinji so hard this first time--he looked beat, and Kippei had forgotten that Shinji would wear out more quickly. Kippei was used to having to keep going even when he was tired.

"Sorry," he added. "We can stop for tonight."

Thank god for small mercies, like stopping for the night. Were they really going to do this again tomorrow night? They were...oh god, Shinji hoped he learned damn fast because Kippei was a slave driver and the sooner he got better the less this was going to hurt. But the sooner they got back to their room the sooner he could have a bath. bath...hmm.

"You owe me a bath. You and me and lots of hot water." And then maybe he would do something about unfrustrating Kippei.
